These tree shapes are based on woodblock prints by Utagawa Ando Hiroshige (Japanese, 1797-1858). Typical of Hiroshige’s style was the extreme cropping of motives, especially the trees used in the foreground. The apparent randomness of the cropping and resulting flattened spaces are intriguing. By separating and presenting the trees on a black background, these images push towards abstraction and the imaginary.
